Competition Guide

Bib delivery
All competitors will receive a drop bag ticket if they wish to leave a bag at the starting line. The bags can be retrieved near the finish line.
Competitors in Gyðjan will also receive a “drop-bag” ticket that they will place on the bag that will go to Kjarnaskógur. Remember to mark that ticket with the competitor’s number. That bag will also be left at the starting line.
During bib pickup, competitors in Gyðjan must sign the terms of the race.
Delivery of bibs takes place at the 66°Norður store at Skipagata 6.
Thursday, July 31st 2:00 PM-6:00 PM
Friday, August 1st 2:00 PM-7:00 PM
Starting point
The start line for Gyðjan is at Goðafoss waterfall. The start line for all other distances is in Kjarnaskógur in the meadow above Kjarnakot.
- Gyðjan: kl. 21.00 or 02.00
- Tröllið: kl. 8.00
- Súlur: kl.10.00
- Fálkinn: kl.11.30
Arrival is a minimum of 15 minutes before the start.
Competitors must display mandatory equipment at the starting line.
Bus trips to the starting point
Bus transfers will be offered for competitors from Hof to Goðafoss on Friday evening and to Kjarnaskógur on Saturday morning. Competitors in Gyðjan must register for the Bus Trip.
The bus ride to Goðafoss takes approximately 45 minutes and departs at 19:45 for the earlier start and 00:45 for the later start.
The bus ride to Kjarnaskóg takes 10 minutes and departs 45 minutes before the start. We strongly encourage competitors to take advantage of this option as parking in Kjarnaskóg is limited.
The bus ride is included in the participation fee. There is ample parking at Hof and from there it is only 400 m to the finish line.
Route marshals and marking
The route is marked with waves with the race logo, rocks painted orange and part of the route is marked. Part of the route is almost impossible to mark so that only visible markings can be used to find your way if visibility is poor, this especially applies to the first part of the route in Gyðjan and the section from Súlur into Lambi in Tröllið and Gyðja. Competitors in Tröllið and Gyðja must therefore have a track of the route installed in their watch/phone.
There will be lane supervision at intersections within Akureyri, but otherwise competitors are expected to familiarize themselves with the route and take care of their own safety when crossing roads/streets. Limited lane supervision is available on more remote parts of the route.
Finish are
The finish line is in the pedestrian street in the center of Akureyri. Drinks will be available for competitors after the race, courtesy of Ölgerðir and MS.
Medical assistance and response to accidents/incidents
Medical assistance will be available at Súlubílastæði aid station and at the finish line. There will also be SAR teams at several sensitive points along the course. Race officials will monitor and assess the condition of runners along the route and, if they deem it necessary, will stop runners (see below).
If a competitor gets lost or has a minor accident, they can call the tournament director (860 0636), but if a serious accident occurs, they should call 112 emergency line. Competitors have a legal duty to assist other competitors who have been injured or are in other serious trouble.
The tournament director's phone number will be printed on the bib number, but we also recommend saving it to your phone, the number is 860 0636.
It is not certain that there will be mobile phone service on the first part of the 100 km race route, nor on the route from Súlur to Lambi (Tröllið and Gyðjan).
At the finish line, a doctor will greet all participants and check the well-being and condition of the runners. Please follow his instructions and stop in the medical tent if he requests it.
Runner stop / disqualified
Race marshals (rescue personnel on the race route, chasers, chief referee, doctors and station manager at aid stations) must assess on a case-by-case basis, based on the circumstances, whether the following points apply when assessing a runner's condition and deeming it necessary to stop a runner.
A runner should be stopped if:
- Runner does not meet the time limit for exiting a aid station.
- Runner's mental function is impaired, such as due to hypothermia, overexertion, dehydration or other causes.
- Runner poses a danger to himself and/or others.
- Runner's equipment or clothing is not appropriate for the conditions or he does not have the mandatory safety equipment.
- Runner does not follow the rules of the race.
If a competitor stops / leaves the race
It is absolutely mandatory to notify a race official if a competitor has to leave the race. If you have a mobile phone, call the race director (phone number on the race number), otherwise ask the nearest official to call the race director. This is extremely important so that rescue services are not dispached unnecessarily.
Lavatories
at the Súlubílastæði aid station, Lambi and in the city center of Akureyri.
Timing
Timing is handled by Tímataka.net. It is important that the race number is clearly visible on the front of the competitor at chest or waist level. This is both for the race staff to know who the participants are and to get split times scanned.
Split times will be taken at the following locations:
- Gyðjan: Belgsá, Vaðlaheiði, Kjarnaskógur, Súlubilstähi, Súlur, Lambi, Súlubilstähi, University Campus
- Tröllið: Súlubilstæði, Súlur, Lambi, Súlubilstæði, University Campus
- Súlur: Súlubilstæði, Súlur, Súlubilastæði, University Campus
- Fálkinn: Súlubilstæði, University Campus
Cut off times
Time limits are set with the safety of both the runner and the rescuers in mind. The time limits can be found on the page for each distance.
The finish line closes at 19:00 and race staff will then take down the timing equipment and finish area.
Award ceremony
There are women's and men's races in all distances, and prizes are awarded for the top three places in each category.
The awards ceremony will be held in the city center at the finish line and prizes will be awarded at 4 p.m.
Where to cheer the runners
Friends and relatives of competitors are encouraged to come and cheer them on and make their mark on the race. It is a good idea to use the time tables with the estimated times of the slowest and fastest runners to see when runners will be on the course at each location (see information about each distance). It will also be possible to see the competitors' split times at timataka.is and estimate when they can be expected in the second half of the course.
The competition committee specifically points out the following locations, where it is easy to get to the competition route:
- Godafoss
- Vaglaskógur
- Bridges at Leiruvegur
- Kjarnaskógur
- Gamli
- Fálkafell
- Súlubílastæði aid station
- Fallorkustígur
- Path by the University
