Súlur is a 29 km mountain run with an elevation gain of 1410 m. A demanding run but within the reach of most with good preparation.

The race starts in Kjarnaskógur, from where you run up to the hamlets above the forest where there is a great view of the town and the fjord. From there you run to Súlubílastæði and then continue along a marked trail up the mountain Súlur. At the top of Súlnar there is a turning point and the race returns to Súlubílastæði via the same route. From Súlubílastæði the route runs over Glerárgil and then follows a recent path known as Fallorka along the Glerá River to Hlíðarbraut. You cross Hlíðarbraut and continue along Glerá River to the University of Akureyri. Finally, the last 2–3 kilometers are run along the streets of the town down to the center of Akureyri where the race ends.
