Súlur Vertical was first held in 2016 at the initiative of ultrarunner Þorbergur Ingi Jónsson.

The Súlur Vertical association is organizing today's event. The Súlur Vertical association was founded in 2020. The purpose of the association is, among other things, to promote outdoor activities and physical activity, organize events, increase and improve off-road paths and markings in the vicinity of Akureyri, and promote the popularity of off-road running, mountain running, and other outdoor activities.

Þorbergur Ingi started the competitors, then ran from the city center to Súlutind and back to town, first, to time the other competitors.

2017

And for the second time

The race was held on August 26th at Akureyrarvaka.



2018

The Autumn Run

  • The weather: the finest autumn weather.

The race was moved to the fall this time and the race was on October 13th because we were expecting foreign guests. When it came time, however, they were unable to attend, and the Icelanders struggled in the snow up to Súlur and mud.



2019

Foreign elite runners

  • Weather: sunny and mild

Great runner Hayden Hawks showed up and won the 28 km race in the men's category. His wife Ashley Hawks also had a good run and won the women's category over the same distance.

2020

The race that never happened


The year is in a fog, but many people trained well. A Covid ban on gatherings was announced on the Thursday before the race. The course was ready, the aid stations were ready and about 500 runners were registered to compete. But we had to cancel.

Covid is still raging. For example, a kids' race had to be canceled and competitors had to start in smaller groups due to infection control regulations.


2022

Small changes... snow in the mountains

Changes had to be made to the route of the 55 KM race due to snow and weather in Glerárdalur.

2023

A new path and new names

The year the distances were given names and a new 100 KM distance was introduced.

2024

Race keeps growing in size
