The troll

The 43 km Tröllið is a mountain race with an elevation gain of 1870 meters, where the race takes you up to the town's mountain Súlur and from there along the mountain ridge into Glerárdalur. A challenging route in a spectacular setting.

The race starts in Kjarnaskógur, from where you run up to the hamlets above the forest where there is a great view of the town and the fjord. After about 300 m of elevation on a good path you pass the Gamla scout hut and then continue over the cliffs and past another scout hut called Fálkafell. From there you run down to the Súlubílastäði where there is the first refreshment station. After that, the first real climb begins up a marked hiking trail to the town mountain Súlur.

After just over 5 km and 900 m of elevation gain, the summit is reached and then we continue over to Syðri Súlur and then south along the mountain range, passing Krummi and to Litli Krummi, then we turn down into Lambárdalur, over Lambárjökull and up to Lambáröxl. From there down into Glerárdalur to the Lamba hiking hut. This part of the route is rocky and steep in parts and we recommend that you proceed with caution here.

At Lambi there is a drinking station run by the rescue team Súlur. From Lambi, a marked trail runs 11 km back to the Súlu parking lot. The route then crosses Glerárgil and then follows a recent path known as Fallorka along the Glerá River. Cross Hlíðarbraut and continue along the Glerá River to the University of Akureyri.

Finally, the last 2–3 kilometers are run along the streets of the town down to the center of Akureyri where the race ends.

Competitors in the Troll must have a track of the route on a watch or phone.
